School Boundary Changes for Wheeling Elementary School
In January 2021, the APS Board of Education directed district staff to Implement the next phase of the Blueprint APS plan. This includes repurposing and transitioning Wheeling Elementary School into the Region 6 Entrepreneurship and Invention K-8 Magnet School. You can read the announcement from the APS Board here.
The new magnet school will open for grades K-3 in August 2022 and add a grade level each year until the school ultimately serves students in grades K-8.
Because students from across the district will be eligible to apply for enrollment in the magnet school, current Wheeling students will need to either apply to attend the new magnet school or attend a new neighborhood boundary school.
As part of the process for establishing a new school boundary for Wheeling students, APS convened an internal school boundary change committee. This committee assessed the attendance areas and enrollment capacities for schools in the surrounding area, and is recommending school boundary changes that may impact the following elementary schools in addition to Wheeling beginning the 2022-23 school year:
- Arkansas
- Tollgate
- Virginia Court
You can view the recommended school boundary change options here.
APS welcomed community feedback on these options from families and staff members of the potentially impacted schools through an online survey and through the following virtual and in-person community meetings:
Date | Session | Location |
Nov. 4 | 5-7 pm - Community Meeting at Wheeling Elementary School | Wheeling Elementary School 472 S Wheeling St., Aurora, CO 80012 |
Nov. 9 | 5:30-7 pm - Virtual Community Meeting | (VIRTUAL) |
Nov. 10 | 5-7 pm - Community Meeting at Wheeling Elementary School | Wheeling Elementary School 472 S Wheeling St., Aurora, CO 80012 |
Nov. 11 | 10-11:30 am - Virtual Community Meeting | (VIRTUAL) |
Nov. 11 | 5:30-7 pm - Virtual Community Meeting | (VIRTUAL) |
At these meetings, district staff members shared more information about the recommended school boundary change options and gathered feedback from parents and staff members.
Based on the data collected, committee analyses and community input, APS leadership and the School Boundary Change Committee are preparing boundary change recommendations to the APS Board of Education in January 2022. If the Board approves the recommendations, new boundaries will go into effect beginning in the 2022-23 school year.
We will share more details with you as the process moves forward, and we look forward to hearing your views. In the meantime, for more information, explore the tabs above or view our Frequently Asked Questions.
